World War II: Vermilion County Stories

During World War II, a large and diverse group of Vermilion County, Illinois residents proudly served their country.  World War II: Vermilion County Stories is a thirty-minute documentary focusing on seven of those residents:

  • John Sant enlisted in the Air Force in 1942 and was a prisoner of war in Germany, where he recorded his experiences in diaries and drawings.
  • Bill Kannapel cared for soldiers as a doctor with the 89th Station Hospital in Australia and New Guinea.
  • Helen Montgomery served in the Medical and Identification division of the American Women's Voluntary Service.
  • Gerald Sooley, a Navy veteran, repaired battleships as an engineer in the drydocks of Guam.
  • Charlie Dukes was a POW of both the Germans and Russians and wrote about his experiences in his book Good Morning, But the Nightmares Never End.
  • Joe McCormick was a translator who worked with the Free French.
  • Milt Crippin was an Army infantryman who landed on Utah Beach on D-Day. 

The documentary premiered at the Danville Public Library on October 16, 2007, followed by a panel discussion.
